Overlay networks is a term for network that run on top of existing infrastructure but provide certain additional functionality. Overlays are created for a number of different reasons. Some overlays are created to provide testbeds for novel protocols and distributed systems that are hard to test on existing networks (for example, multicast and IPv6 experiments). Other overlay networks are used in production to provide features non-existent in the original protocols and infrastructure – for instance, to provide additional security features to transactions done over mainstream TCP and IP protocols that were not designed with security in mind. Secure Overlay Services is an overlay network that makes use of several existing crypto and routing techniques to protect communication between the participants against denial of service attacks. WebSOS

WebSOS is an implementation of the Secure Overlay Services framework. The goal of WebSOS is to protect a web server against denial of service attacks. As a specific implementation of the SOS algorithm, WebSOS access points use a CAPTCHA graphical Turing test, displaying an image with some distorted alpanumeric string, and making the user type the string in a box, to tell between humans and scripts, and to filter out all scripted requests to the target web server, effectively making a DoS attack impossible. Mayday

Mayday is an improvement to Columbia SOS work suggested by MIT. While based on similar concepts, the original study provides a more general and solid approach by considering all aspects of an overlay (e.g., a threat model), and generalizing previous work. Unlike multiple duplicate SOS papers that appear to be created just for the sake of a publication, the Mayday work is shorter yet appears to be more fundamental by considering the most important aspects of a DoS-resistant overlay network design step-by-step, and filling in some obvious gaps of previous work (such as a legitimate client attacker, for example)....
