Mayday is an improvement to Columbia SOS work suggested by MIT. While based on similar concepts, the original study provides a more general and solid approach by considering all aspects of an overlay (e.g., a threat model), and generalizing previous work. Unlike multiple duplicate SOS papers that appear to be created just for the sake of a publication, the Mayday work is shorter yet appears to be more fundamental by considering the most important aspects of a DoS-resistant overlay network design step-by-step, and filling in some obvious gaps of previous work (such as a legitimate client attacker, for example).
